product endorsement (i)

1. Golf Digest Limited-Flight Golf Balls

i am fortunate because my living room is long (30 ft) with a sturdy bare wall on one end - perfect for golf swing practices. i can tee a practice ball, swing away with full speed and the ball will bounce off the wall doing no damage.

i once bought a dozen of rubber practice balls but soon discovered that they disintegrated easily. they're okay for driver hits but the repeated compressions with my irons wrought havoc on the balls and not even a month later i was forced to shop for another dozen.

so then i bought these cheap Golf Digest practice balls at Target (target.com) which are made of rubber but covered with hard plastic and i just love love love these balls.

the hits on these balls feel true and i can even notice the spin imparted on them when hitting with short irons. the balls supposedly, according to the manufacturer, will fly 15% of a normal hitting distance. but since i hit the balls indoors i can't really attest to it. however what i love the most about these balls is their durability.

the plastic cover made it last a LOT longer even when hit with my irons. mind you, the balls still do broke after a while, but only after a long while. i've had these dozen for four months now and i still have three practice balls left. all in all a very worthy purchase despite its low price, and highly recommended.

2. Callaway Golf Hitting Mat

as i've mentioned, i am able to practice my golf shots in my living room (the perks of living single...), which is a huge blessing during the winter months here in Chicago. in fact, even when the warmer weather comes around, i don't really have to go to a golf range since i can always swing away in my apartment. the living room is long enough that i can even surmise whether the flight of the ball is a draw or a fade. and it's fun that i am always able to tee up and imagine myself at one of the golf courses i frequent, with the layout info ready (i'd often go to google earth and take notes on the course: where the bunkers and trees are, how far are they from the tee, how long the drive and the approach shots should be, whether to fade or draw the ball, etc etc) and i will play just as if i am actually on the course. very very fun!

obviously for hits with iron shots, i needed a golf hitting mat - one that is small enough that i don't have to stand on it, and sturdy enough to withstand my divot-taking hits. a while back, i had a mat but ruined it quickly. the fibers came apart, the rubber base got torn. so when i bought one at Golfsmith (golfsmith.com), i was expecting the same poor product.

but boy oh boy, does this one hold up very nicely. it's a Callaway product, measures 8" by 16" and an inch deep, with true-turf surface and a heavy rubber base.

the turf feels awesome as if a typical fairway when hit with irons and hybrids, and turf fibers are very strong that they haven't gotten torn even a bit in my four months of heavy pounding on it. the rubber is durable, and heavy enough that it won't slide away easily. it even comes with a special rubber tee that holds a regular tee (you'll have to cut your tee to compensate for the length since you can't stick it into the ground) and voila, you can hit your shot to your fav tee length, be it high for a long drive and slightly short for a knockdown shot. i highly recommend this mat for practice use.
