celestial navigation
for those of you who share my love of the moon the stars and all the planets, there's a treat up in the heavens that may delight you.
these nights, at about 9pm central, if you look towards east-northeast, you will see a 'star' that sparkles noticeably brighter than all others. that's the planet Saturn, and it lines up almost straight with the two twins of Gemini - Castor and Pollux, Pollux being more luminous of the two. you will see three very shiny heavenly bodies, on a line slanting upwards-left, with the very radiant Saturn at the bottom, Pollux in the middle, and Castor the least shiniest on top. you won't miss it, coz these three are most visible on the ENE sky, compared to the others.
and if you need celestial assistance in locating those three, wait till november30 when the moon will sit between the Twins and Saturn. find the moon, and you'll find the trio.
for those of you in m'sia, you will find Saturn around 10pm, east-northeast. and for ealing, you share my northern sky, so Saturn will rise around 9pm. go see!!
also, if you get the chance to be up at dawn, go out and check out the trio of Mars, Venus and Jupiter. you'll find them hovering over the east-southeastern sky at around 6-7am. the three of them will form almost a perfect line too, with Mars (you'll see its distinctive reddish shine) at near the horizon, followed by Venus very close by (Venus is very VERY bright), and then some distance away is Jupiter.
and if you have already identified Saturn from the night before, you'll see ALL of them that dawn: Mars, Venus and Jupiter ( at ESE), and Saturn-Moon-Pollux-Castor (now at WNW).
it's a neat treat! go check it out! and remember, when you gasp at seeing these magnificent sights, just whisper to yourself that syamil shows you the way...
